New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
