Jair Bolsonaro detained after being considered a risk of fleeing

Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that he be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
