Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
